in, Self-Improvement

There comes a time in every man’s life where he must buy a domain, install blogging software and tell his three blog readers (hereafter known as “the world”) what he has learned.  You know, all the things he has just figured out that millions people already knew and took to their graves.  So, being the tradition-honoring man that I am, I have compiled these life lessons into a simple, yet incomplete set of rules, in no particular order.  Enjoy.

  1. If you have a problem, go to the source.  All of this gossip is killing civility and society.
  2. If you broke it, own up to it.  Personal responsibility is about as scarce as common sense is becoming.
  3. If you’re a guy — get a job.  Do something worthwhile to give back to the world as we know it.
  4. Tell it like it is — if you don’t share how you feel about it now, it may get really inconvenient to tell about it later.
  5. If you’re a gal — be yourself.  Somewhere, there’s a guy that wants his job in life to be the honor of being your husband.
  6. Go outside — computers are stupid and cause headaches.
  7. Turn off the net once in awhile.  The more frequent the merrier.  As it turns out people are still fun to talk to face to face.
  8. Follow the money.  To find out how decisions are made, what people care about, what people worship — follow the money.  It’s right all the time.
  9. Give.  People who haven’t given don’t know what they’re missing.  Those of us who have gave, wish we had more to give.
  10. If you “gave” but don’t somehow wish you could do more, you didn’t give, you just appeased.  Try again.
  11. Go outside — a little fresh air is good for you.  I didn’t mean just drive with the top down.  You should probably get off your back side and move it, move it.
  12. Choose your battles.  Some are not worth fighting.  Some are not worth loosing.  Learn how to choose which is which.
  13. There is no number 13.  I’m not superstitious, I just don’t like unnecessary risk.
  14. Find something that inspires you, or that brings you “home” where you can start or restart your thinking and creative processes.  Keep that inspirational thing near you to be used at a moment’s notice as often as needed.
  15. Don’t buy or use technology just for technology’s sake.  Have a reason to embark on that journey of stress, broken updates, missing files, poor signal, lack of connectivity and gray hair.  I mean, duh — didn’t you read number 6?
  16. Don’t do something just because that’s how it’s always been done.  Be a fixer.  Not every process or practice is perfect. “It is what it is” is a sign of failure.
  17. Don’t jump into someone else’s business just because you have two cents to spend.  If it was your business to be involved, you’d already be involved.  If it is your business, you should think before you speak anyway — offer something helpful, with the right attitude.
  18. Do a lot of stuff.  The more experience you can gain the more you can put together the pieces of this crazy world and help them make sense to someone.  Hello, job security.
  19. Keep learning.  If you stop, you are only hurting yourself.  We’ll keep on being cool without you.
  20. Don’t stop at good enough.  Always keep a goal in front of your eyes.
  21. Don’t let idiots ruin your day.
